Victoria: The secret sauce lies in deeply understanding and caring about Brownsville. This city is more than just a place I work; it's where I grew up, and I’ve seen firsthand both the challenges and the immense potential that exist here.

Our programs are designed with the community at heart, tailored to meet the specific needs of our people while keeping their aspirations front and center. It’s about listening closely, learning constantly, and adapting quickly, never settling for just good enough. Every day in economic development brings new challenges, and I embrace them because I know that even the smallest victories can contribute to something much bigger. When you’re genuinely driven by a desire to see your community not just survive but thrive, success isn’t just a goal; it’s the natural outcome.

Q: You’ve been deeply involved in economic development in Brownsville for several years. How has your personal connection to the community influenced your work and your vision for the city’s future?

Victoria: Growing up in Brownsville has given me a deep understanding of our community’s diverse needs. I’ve found that people here value authenticity; they want to connect with someone who truly understands their experiences and makes them feel heard. That’s a role I take to heart.

My background drives me to ensure that our economic development initiatives are inclusive and resonate with everyone. My vision for Brownsville is a future where growth isn’t just about economic gains but about creating meaningful opportunities for everyone. We’re working to build a community where every resident can thrive and where the next generation can see a future for themselves right here at home.

Q: If you had never worked at BCIC or gone into economic development, what do you think you would be doing now?

Victoria: If I hadn’t found my way into economic development, I believe I would have been drawn to a career in public policy. I’ve always had a passion for digging into research, analyzing complex issues, and developing solutions that can have a meaningful impact. Whether it’s through public policy or economic development, my goal has always been to create positive change and ensure that communities like Brownsville have the support and resources they need to thrive. I’m driven by the desire to make a lasting impact, and I think working in public policy would have been another meaningful way to achieve that.

Q: In your opinion, what are some of the most underrated aspects of living and working in Brownsville, and how do you think these can be better highlighted to attract more businesses and talent to the area?

Victoria: What I love most about Brownsville is how deeply connected everyone is. There’s a genuine warmth and resilience here that you just don’t find everywhere. Every time I travel, I always say the same thing: "There’s no place like home," because it’s true in so many ways.

Whether it’s our close ties to Mexico, our proximity to the beach, or the fact that we’re now part of something as exciting as the space industry, Brownsville has so much to offer. As our city grows, we’re seeing new energy and opportunities that are truly exciting. To attract more businesses and talent, we need to showcase what really makes Brownsville stand out: our people. This is more than just a place to work; it’s a place where you can build a meaningful life and be part of a community that feels like family.

Q: What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about your day-to-day routine?

Victoria: People might be surprised to learn that I kick off my mornings with a cold plunge, 55 degrees cold, to be exact! My goal is to eventually reach 50 degrees, little by little. It’s become a ritual that really helps me stay focused and balanced, setting the tone for whatever the day throws at me. It might sound a bit intense, but I’d honestly recommend it to anyone. It’s a powerful way to ground yourself and get ready for the challenges ahead.

Q: If you had to describe your perfect day off, what would it look like?

Victoria: My perfect day off is all about simplicity and quality time with my family. I’d start with a workout at home to get my energy up, then spend the day being productive around the house. Maybe we’d do a bit of shopping or just enjoy the day together at home. To wrap it all up, nothing beats a good carne asada with my family, complete with a cold beer. It’s the perfect way to relax, recharge, and enjoy the little things that matter most.

Q: You oversee programs like the eBridge Fund that have had a massive impact on local businesses. Can you share a story about a particular business that stands out to you and why?

Victoria: It’s hard to single out just one business because every entrepreneur we’ve supported through BCIC brings something unique to Brownsville. From family-owned restaurants to innovative local brands, each business contributes to the richness of our community in its own way.

What stands out to me is not just the success of individual businesses but the collective impact they’ve had on our city. The drive and determination that each entrepreneur brings to the table are truly inspiring. Their resilience and creativity are the heart of their success. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of this journey, seeing how these businesses, with our support, have flourished and helped to build a stronger, more vibrant Brownsville. Q: If you could go back in time and give one piece of advice to your younger self when you first started in economic development, what would it be?

Victoria: I’d tell my younger self to trust her instincts and take on every challenge that comes her way. Resilience and adaptability have been key for me in navigating the world of economic development.

I’d also remind myself that taking risks is where real growth happens, even when it’s uncomfortable. My favorite quote is, "Growth and comfort do not coexist," and I’d tell my younger self to live by that, keep pushing forward, step out of your comfort zone, and don’t be afraid to embrace the unknown. That’s where the most meaningful progress is made, both personally and professionally.
