PRESS RELEASE: BCIC Announces StartUp Texas Program
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – March 2nd, 2020.
The Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC), the Type B Economic Development Corporation for the City of Brownsville, announced the premiere of the StartUp Texas program during the inaugural Crossroads Festival “Talks” Series last Monday. The program offers entrepreneurs and businesses seed-stage capital to Texas-based companies that are commercializing a product or process. The funds exist to stimulate private investment in Texas-based companies with high growth potential.
“When city leaders and entrepreneurs work together, they can create communities with vibrant local economies where startups and small businesses thrive – that’s what we are doing in Brownsville,” says Nathan Burkhart, Director of Business Development at BCIC, “we believe in the capacity of the human capital of our community.”
The program is yet another tool the BCIC has developed towards creating a community and culture of entrepreneurs. Qualifying applicants will be able to compete in the StartUp Texas Summit on May 6th, 2020 for a share of $100,000 so long as the business operations are located or expanded in the designated city limits of Brownsville, Texas and the funds are justified through the business and growth plan.
”The next economy will be entrepreneurial, and because entrepreneurship is an innately human and highly personal endeavor, our focus should be on people, on our community.

“Startups are not all located in the Bay Area or the East Coast. We have incredible, innovative individuals and small businesses across our community,” says Burkhart. “The next economy will be entrepreneurial, and because entrepreneurship is an innately human and highly personal endeavor, our focus should be on people, on our community.”
Aside from the chance to obtain seed funding, this initiative seeks to provide qualifying participants the opportunity to gain skills in presenting their projects and ideas with constructive feedback to assist in future funding endeavors and success in their launches.
“People everywhere have the desire to build the future and we want to be the engine of that desire. We want to be investing in visionary founders, transformational technologies, and emergent ecosystems for the new economy, right here in Brownsville,” says Burkhart.
